- Passport
- Visa Requirements
You are required to have a valid passport for travel to South Africa. It is recommended your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date to Canada.
There are currently no visa requirements for Canadian citizens to enter South Africa. If you’re extending through other countries, please check requirements or contact MCI at presidentsacademy@wearemci.com.
Requirements for stays of 90 days or less (Visa-exempt):
- Passport: A Canadian passport valid for at least 30 days beyond the intended stay; however, we recommend at least six months beyond your return date to Canada.
- Return/Onward Ticket: Proof of onward travel is required.
- Financial Means: Sufficient funds to support the stay.
- Health: In good health.
- No criminal record: No criminal or immigration-related convictions.
- Ties to Canada: Sufficient ties to Canada to ensure return (e.g., job, family, assets).
Permanent Resident Card
Permanent Residents of Canada must present their valid Permanent Resident (PR) card or Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) when boarding a flight to Canada or travelling to Canada on any other commercial carrier. If you do not carry your PR card or PRTD, you may not be able to board, which can result in travel delays and additional costs. The PR card expires every five years. You must ensure it is still valid for the date you return from travel outside Canada.
- If you are not a Canadian Citizen
- PR Card Expiry
- Delay in the PR
- Please Note
Contact Jamie Pettersen: presidentsacademy@wearemci.com about documentation requirements and applications.
Check your PR card expiry date and, if necessary, apply for a new one as soon as possible. Forms are available online at https://www.cic.gc.ca/.
If you have applied for a PR card but not received it one week prior to your departure, advise MCI and carry the following documentation with you on your trip:
- Copy of your expired PR Card or IMM 1000 Record of Landing
- Copy of your application for the PR card
- Copy of your PR card status
This is no guarantee that carrying copies of these documents will allow you re-entry into Canada.

Health Canada and Vaccinations
- Health Canada
- Recommended Vaccines
Health Canada strongly recommends an individual risk assessment by your own family doctor or a travel medicine provider prior to travelling. Based on your health, the need for vaccinations or any special precautions can be determined. The following vaccinations are recommended when visiting South Africa.
- Yellow Fever = 1 Dose
- Hepatitis A = 2 Doses
- Hepatitis A and B combined (adult) = 3 Doses
- Hepatitis A and typhoid (combined) = 1 Dose
- Hepatitis B = 3 Doses
- Malaria Prophylaxis =
- Typhoid = 1 Dose
- Typhoid (oral) = 1 Dose
If extending in other countries or regions pre or post Academy dates, please assess any vaccination considerations for the area, as they may impact entry to South Africa.
If you take medication, be sure to pack an extra supply in case you are away for longer than expected. Carrying a duplicate of your original prescription, along with an extra one, is recommended. This is also a good idea if you wear glasses or contact lenses – having the prescription makes it easier to replace them. At the airport, keep medication and eyeglasses with you in your carry-on, rather than checked luggage.

Security & ID
We suggest that you leave all high value items at home. If it is not possible to leave at home, suggested to leave in your room safe, including but not limited to watches and jewellery.
By law everyone must carry a photo ID. Checks are rare in the cities but more common on the road. A photocopy of your passport or driver’s license (with photo) is sufficient.
Travel Insurance
Out of country medical insurance for emergency care is included with your IG Wealth Management Personal Choice Benefits if you have medical coverage. If you have opted out of the Personal Choice medical coverage, please review your alternate coverage to ensure that both you and your travelling companion are adequately covered for the duration of your trip.
